The purpose built facility comprises workshops, classrooms, staff rooms and male and female changing rooms with shower facilities. One workshop houses a light aircraft for students to work on as part of their course. The building comprises of a steel frame structure enveloped by rainscreen cladding, curtain walling, aluminium profiled roofing and sarnafil roofing. All aspects of the design including the mechanical and electrical elements were designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating. The project was been part funded by the Scottish Funding Council with the BREEAM rating being one of the funding conditions.
Invitations to apply to be on the tender list were submitted through the Public Contracts Scotland website and the successful applicants were issued with traditional tender documents which included full Bills of Quantities, including mechanical and electrical installation Bills of Quantities, specification and tender drawings.
During the construction phase close financial monitoring was carried out with value engineering exercises being undertaken to allow the Contract Administrator to make decisions on variations that have a financial impact on the project.
The project had a tight timescale to allow the Client to commence their courses in the new facility in September 2011.
The facility was officially opened on 7th December 2011 by Dr Alasdair Allan MSP Minister for Learning, Science and Scotland’s Languages, and Angela Constance MSP in her first engagement as Minister for Youth Employment.
